As a chef, I seek out the best in every city and love to find unexpected gems. Sal's Seafood in the Fells Point section of Baltimore is exactly that. It's the cleanest restaurant I've ever stepped foot in, serving the freshest seafood dishes. It's a seafood market near the waterfront, so you know the fish is fresh.
I ordered a local Bmore specialty - Lake Trout. It was served with spicy house tarter sauce, fresh lettuce and tomato and it was heavenly. The trout was expertly grilled with house seasonings and melted in my mouth. Owner Sal and Chef Orlando stopped by to offer me a taste of their Ceviche of fish and shrimp in a zesty citrus sauce and a couple of freshly shucked, plump & briny oysters. Both samples were amazing. Their hospitality was gracious.
Chef Orlando chatted with me as he cooked in his open style kitchen. We talked about food, about using the freshest ingredients, about the chilies he uses for his house Arbol de Chile Sauce. He shared food photos and I saw familiar faces, fans of his talent, with names like Chazz Palminteri, Robert DeNiro and Andy Garcia. It turns out Orlando worked for Palminteri at his Baltimore restaurant Chazz, taking over chef duties at Sal's only a few months ago. Well, this is lucky for locals who already rave. A check of Yelp shows only 5 Star reviews for Sal's Seafood, easy to see why.
Sals is hands down my top recommend in Bmore. Lake Trout and a drink came to $7.17 - an unreal bargain in this city. Try Chef Orlando's imaginative daily specials and watch him cook in the open style kitchen. Friendly Staff too! This is truly a FIVE STAR experience if you're looking for a hidden gem with no pretenses, fabulous fresh food and real hometown feel.
